The Beach Boys, along with Surf Rock Icon Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean, hosted a May 21 concert to benefit the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids programs.
In total, $33,407 was raised to fight childhood hunger in central and western Oklahoma. This will support 167 children in the program for an entire year, according to a news release.
“It’s an honor to have Oklahomans gather up for one night for this important cause,” said John Occhipinti, who organized the concert, in the release. “It was great to see that and it will make a huge here in Oklahoma. We look forward to working with the Regional Food Bank in the future.”
One in four children in Oklahoma struggles with hunger. Last school year, the Regional Food Bank provided the equivalent of 3.2 million meals to chronically hungry children through Food for Kids childhood hunger programs, which includes the Backpack Program and School Pantries:
- Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, nonperishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays. Last school year, about 18,500 students in 514 schools participated in the Backpack Program.
- The School Pantry Program provides chronically hungry middle and high school students with food to sustain them after school and over the weekends. The School Pantry Program ended last school year serving nearly 5,000 students in143 middle and high schools.
“Children should never have to wonder where their next meal will come from,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, in the release. “We want to thank the Beach Boys, the community and show organizer John Occhipinti for helping fight childhood hunger in the state.”
Established in 1980, the Regional Food Bank is the largest private, domestic hunger-relief organization in the state of Oklahoma. Last fiscal year, the nonprofit distributed 49.9 million pounds of food and products through a network of more than 1,250 charitable feeding programs and schools in 53 central and western Oklahoma counties.
