As the old saying goes, it's where the surf meets the turf. The fall racing season in Del Mar kicked off on November 1st, bringing with it a series of events, musical acts and races that could make any season bright. Originally founded by Bing Crosby in 1939, the track's second season is now in its fourth year, bringing back the old-school cool and high-end racing that Crosby initially envisioned. Opening Day at the Races began with the Vintage Hollywood Fashion Contest, where guests were awarded different prizes for their vintage-inspired dress.
This year, the Del Mar Racetrack celebrated its 78th year of sport in a way that only a top track in the United States could—by playing host to the Breeder's Cup, one of the world's most prestigious racing events. Since 1984, the Breeder's Cup has forged the way as a premier horseracing event, showcasing the best of the best international horse breeders, jockeys and trainers. After 33 years, the Cup finally came to Del Mar. The event has served as the cornerstone of the horse breeding world, igniting the industry through a shared love of sport. A replica of the Breeder's Cup trophy now sits cozily on the racetrack's grounds, reminding all visitors of the historic event that took place there this year.
When planning a day at the races, it's imperative to sit where all the action is while still staying comfortable. After all, who doesn't love sitting back with a glass of Champagne while placing your bets? If you're looking to go the whole nine yards, choose a table at the Turf Club. A favorite among breeders and owners alike, guests in this section receive tableside service all day, your very own television to view the race details and some of the best views of the track on the grounds. If you don't feel like dressing up, the trackside dining options at the Clubhouse are just as comfortable and still provide incredible views.
Some of the most exciting events to occur on the track happen after the races are over. Most evenings a musical guest makes an appearance, giving those in the crowd a show to remember. Some of the acts that came to Del Mar this year included The Offspring, The Roots, Iration and many more. As if there wasn't enough entertainment to be had, Del Mar also hosts a variety of festivals on its grounds. The Craft Beer, Cider, Cocktail & Wine Fest is of note, bringing together San Diego's most famed breweries and wineries to one location for a day of boozy fun.
Races, music and foodie festivals aren't the only thing to head to the track for, however. Saturdays are one of the best days to come to the track, both for the quality of races and the information provided. Daybreak at Del Mar kicks off every Saturday morning at 8 a.m., where guests will be offered an assorted breakfast menu while watching the thoroughbreds do their morning gallop. Former jockey and announcer Jeff Bloom dispenses his knowledge of the races and industry in an interactive Q & A session.
Sunday Brunch is a also big thing at Del Mar, and for good reason. Guests have the opportunity to participate in Taste of the Turf Club, where everyone is dressed in their Sunday best while being served by Brian Malarkey, one of San Diego's best chefs. While the season may be over this year, there's still plenty of time to plan for next year's festivities. The track's summer session usually kicks off in early June, so don't miss out on any opportunity to visit the history, pageantry and fun to be had at Del Mar no matter the time of year.>
