Thor Ragnarok is roaring at the Indian box office, leaving its previous two films from the same franchise far behind in collections. The film had the second best opening after Fast & Furious 8 this year, with first day collection standing at Rs 7.75 crore. And, amid other Hollywood releases in India, the film ranks seventh for highest opening in the country.
Released on 1,200 screens in India, Thor saw a growth of 15-20 percent on day two and raked in Rs 9.25 crore. The god of thunder continued to storm the box office on day three by adding Rs 10.50 crore in its kitty and made a total of Rs 27.50 crore during the weekend.
The third instalment in the Thor franchise in Marvel Cinematic Universe has surpassed the collection of the first two films. Hitting the theatres in November 2013, Thor: The Dark World made approximately Rs 10.39 crore during the time of its opening and the next film went on to earn lifetime collection of Rs 23.38 crore.
In comparison to these films, the latest offering from the franchise has already grossed Rs 35 crore in just 5 days.
Out of the many Hollywood releases this year, Thor managed to exceed collections of films like Annabelle: Creation earning Rs 7.40 crore on day one and Rs 22.75 crore during opening weekend, Transformers: The Last Knight opened at Rs 5.50 crore and made Rs 14.75 crore during the weekend. It also toppled movies like Wonder Woman, The Mummy, Baywatch, Beauty and the Beast and Logan that earned Rs 2.10 crore, Rs 3.70 crore, Rs 2.20 crore, Rs 1.42 crore and Rs 4.75 crore, respectively.
Opening weekend collections of the following films are Rs 9.10 crore, Rs 12.55 crore, Rs 5.5 crore, Rs 6.67 crore and Rs 17.10 crore, respectively.
However, the film could not beat the collections of Fast & Furious 7, which is the highest opening Hollywood film in India with collections worth Rs 12.03 crore. Coming in second is The Avengers- Age of Ultron at Rs 10.96 crore, The Jungle Book at spot three with Rs 10.12 crore, followed by Fast & Furious 8 at Rs 9.57 crore, Captain America at Rs 8.46 crore, Batman vs Superman at Rs 7.93 crore.
According to a FICCI-KPMG report, performance of Hollywood movies at the Indian box office has witnessed a robust growth over the last two years. In 2016, gross collections grew by around 10 percent compared to 2015.
