Zack Snyder won’t be around to finish “Justice League.”
The DC Comics film producer announced Monday that he’s stepped down from his role in the superhero movie to grieve the death of his daughter.
Autumn, 20, died of suicide in March.
“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it,” Snyder told the Hollywood Reporter.
“The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months I’ve come to the realization … I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”
Snyder’s wife Deborah, Autumn’s step-mother, has also stepped down from her role as a producer on the film, which stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller.
Instead, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon, who directed both “Avengers” movies, will take over in post-production.
Warner Bros. Pictures president Toby Emmerich said Whedon wasn’t brought on to change Snyder’s vision.
“The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and the template that Zack set,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.
“We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in some new scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”
Whedon will also oversee several reshoots that were already planned before Autumn’s death.
“Justice League” is due in theaters Nov. 17.
